Our History
Hooked on Phonics® was created in 1987 by a father whose son was struggling to read. To help his son, he developed a systematic in-home phonics program for children. Extensive television and radio advertising featuring the memorable 1-800-ABCDEFG® phone number and the catchy "Hooked on Phonics worked for me!" tagline helped make Hooked on Phonics a household name.
In the 15 years since, more than 2 million families and thousands of schools have turned to Hooked on Phonics for its growing library of educational programs, including reading, math, and study skills.
1987 The original Hooked on Phonics program was released and Gateway Educational Products, Ltd., was founded.
1990 The Hooked on Math® program was introduced.
1996 The company was acquired and became Gateway Learning Corporation.
1998 The all-new Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read program was released and included a library of books by award-winning authors and illustrators. Shortly after its release, Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read received the National Parenting Center Seal of Approval as one of the finest products and services being marketed to the parent/child audience.
1999 A new edition of Hooked on Math was released to include fun games and activities.
2001 Hooked on School Success® was created to teach children reading comprehension, study skills, and test-taking strategies.
Hooked on Math was awarded the Teacher's Choice Award by Learning magazine.
Learn to Read was named one of the top 100 classroom products by Curriculum Administrator magazine (now District Administration magazine).
Hooked on Phonics and KinderCare formed a partnership and began offering Hooked on Phonics tutoring programs in KinderCare daycare centers nationwide.
2002 Learn to Read was named one of the best vacation products by Dr. Toy.
2003 Hooked on School Success was awarded the Teacher's Choice Award by Learning magazine.
Hooked on Phonics Master Reader was developed to teach kids advanced phonics skills.
2004 Master Reader was awarded the Teacher's Choice Award and the inaugural Teacher's Choice Award for the Family by Learning magazine.
2005 Educate, Inc. acquired the company, now known as HOP, LLC.
Hooked on Phonics and KinderCare begin offering the Hooked on Phonics Ready to Read program in KinderCare daycare centers nationwide to teach reading readiness to young children.
HOP, LLC launched Learn to Read grade-level kits and began to sell its titles in major retail locations nationwide.
